A mosque in Lake in the Hills recently received a threatening and derogatory letter that underscores the dangerous misconceptions people have about Islam, the board president said.

The letter sent to the American Muslim Community Organization earlier this month references bombing people at the Lake in the Hills mosque and praying for a civil war to shoot "you slime bags."

Lake in the Hills police are investigating the letter, as the local mosque makes the necessary precautions to protect its patrons, President Dr. Fazal Khan told the Northwest Herald.

As terror groups like ISIS dominate the news, people need to remember the true intent behind Islam, Khan said.

"They need to know Islam is a peaceful religion – number one – and that the purpose is to bring humanity closer to God and closer to each other," Khan said. "Obviously, that is a different message from the Islam people are seeing on TV."

The American Muslim Community Organization reported the letter Feb. 6 to the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The chapter, a regional Islamic civil rights and advocacy organization, also received multiple complaints recently about "racist hate graffiti" at Sandburg High School in south suburban Chicago, according to its website.

In Lake in the Hills, the American Muslim Community Organization had never received a threat until this month after opening nearly a year ago, Khan said.

"Every threat needs to be taken seriously because we're talking about the safety of innocent people," he said. "We are taking it seriously."
